Golf Courses

Commonwealth Golf Club

Commonwealth Golf Club

Glennie Avenue, Oakleigh South, VIC, 3167.
Region: Melbourne Sandbelt

Commonwealth Golf Club

Commonwealth Golf Club is a par 73 golf course which combines a collection of strong par 3 holes with mid to long par 4's and four par 5's - 2 of which are realistically reachable in 2. Commonwealth was, until recently, ranked in the Top 100 golf courses in the world. Why it fell out is anyone's guess but, with the plethora of new courses being developed worldwide each year, it is getting harder to maintain a position in this highly subjective list.

Par (Length): 73 (6380m)
Design: Sam Bennett (1921)
Top 100: 24

Huntingdale Golf Club

Huntingdale Golf Club

Windsor Avenue, Oakleigh South, VIC, 3167.
Region: Melbourne Sandbelt

Huntingdale Golf Club

Huntingdale is a private members course located in the middle of the world famous Melbourne Sandbelt. It was the host of the Australian Masters for 30 years and has hosted the world's best golfers.

Par (Length): 72 (6184m)
Design: Charles H. Alison (1941)
Top 100: 36

Kingston Heath Golf Club

Kingston Heath Golf Club

Kingston Road, Cheltenham, VIC, 3192.
Region: Melbourne Sandbelt

Kingston Heath Golf Club

Kingston Heath Golf Club is perfectly manicured and its bunkering and clever use of dips and hollows visually fools the non-observant golfer. Many people would argue it is a more aesthetically pleasing course than Royal Melbourne, however if you wildly deviate from the fairway, the rough (comprising long grass, tea tree and sandy scrapes) will test your ability to get the ball back into play.

Par (Length): 72 (6352m)
Design: Dan Soutar (bunkering by Alister Mackenzie) (1925)
Top 100: 1

*Letter of introduction required

Royal Melbourne Golf Club (West Course)

Royal Melbourne Golf Club (West Course)

Cheltenham Road, Black Rock, VIC, 3193.
Region: Melbourne Sandbelt

Royal Melbourne Golf Club (West Course)

Royal Melbourne's West Course forms the majority of holes contained within the main boundaries of the golf course aside from 4 holes (13 to 16) which are played across the road in an adjoining property. The par 5 holes are not long and all are reachable in two for the longer hitters. The difficulty of these holes is not so much in the length of the holes but rather the harsh penalties which exists for a less than perfectly struck shot. The style of the holes is similar and MacKenzie has used the peaks and troughs in the slope of the land to maximum benefit. The course is not hilly by any stretch of the imagination however additional challenges are created on selected uphill approach shots.

Par (Length): 72 (6030m)
Design: Alister Mackenzie (1931)
Top 100: 3

*Letter of introduction required

Spring Valley Golf Club

Spring Valley Golf Club

Heatherton Road, Clayton South, VIC, 3169.
Region: Melbourne Sandbelt

Spring Valley Golf Club

Spring Valley Golf Club is one of those underrated golf courses located in the middle of the Melbourne Sandbelt. It is not a course that you may have heard about (compared to its famous neighbours) and this is what makes it even more alluring. From the time you drive in the new sweeping driveway and up to the multi million dollar new clubhouse which sits atop the 9th and 18th greens you will enjoy your day at Spring Valley.

Par (Length): 71 (6161m)
Design: Vern Morcom (1949)
Top 100: 62

The Yarra Yarra Golf Club

The Yarra Yarra Golf Club

567 Warrigal Road, Bentleigh East, VIC, 3165.
Region: Melbourne Sandbelt

The Yarra Yarra Golf Club

Yarra Yarra Golf Club is a par 72 course with its primary feature being its classic par 3 holes. Yarra Yarra is host of the Australian Ladies Masters and is an enjoyable golf course that provides a level of challenge for both low and high handicappers alike. It is a fairly flat course making it easy to walk.

Par (Length): 72 (6102m)
Design: Alex Russell (1929)
Top 100: 34

*Letter of introduction required

Victoria Golf Club

Victoria Golf Club

Park Road, Cheltenham, VIC, 3192.
Region: Melbourne Sandbelt

Victoria Golf Club

Victoria Golf Club, in many ways, is similar to its neighbour Royal Melbourne. Thick tea tree lines most fairways, deep bunkers catch errant shots both at the greenside and off the tee and the greens can be lightning fast. Victoria has hosted a number of major tournaments including the 2002 Australian Open, multiple Victorian Opens and other National tournaments.

Par (Length): 72 (6219m)
Design: Oscar Damman and William Meader (1927)
Top 100: 10

*Letter of introduction required

Woodlands Golf Club

Woodlands Golf Club

White Street, Mordialloc, VIC, 3195.
Region: Melbourne Sandbelt

Woodlands Golf Club

Woodlands Golf Club is a very underrated sandbelt course and somewhat of a hidden gem. Highly regarded by golfing purists, the championship layout features small and fast greens. The narrow fairways are all pure couch and offer a great surface from which to play. There are many bunkers to overcome, particularly the long bunker shots to pins which always seem too close to the bunker edge.

Par (Length): 72 (6111m)
Design: J.D. Scott and R.J. Banks (1913)
Top 100: 22

Moonah Links (Legends Course)

Moonah Links (Legends Course)

Peter Thomson Drive, Rye, VIC, 3941.
Region: Mornington Peninsula

Moonah Links (Legends Course)

Moonah Links Legends Course opened for play in Nov 2003. Very different layout to the Open Course, blending undulating fairways that wind through ancient Moonah forests with pure sweeping links country. With panoramic views from raised tees, shared greens and a host of other unique features this course will fast become a must play for all serious golfers.

Par (Length): 72 (6315m)
Design: Thomson, Wolveridge & Perrett (2003)
Top 100: 13

Moonah Links (Open Course)

Moonah Links (Open Course)

Peter Thomson Drive, Rye, VIC, 3941.
Region: Mornington Peninsula

Moonah Links (Open Course)

Moonah Links Open Course is a links course designed specifically to host The Australian Open. A natural stadium layout with wide undulating fairways of pure couch grass punctuated with pot bunkers, leading onto large multi-tiered greens make this course a true test for all levels of golfer. Also known as 'The Leviathan' and played host to the very recent Australian Open.

Par (Length): 72 (6315m)
Design: Thomson, Wolveridge & Perrett (2002)
Top 100: 26

The Heritage Golf and Country Club (Henley Course)

The Heritage Golf and Country Club (Henley Course)

Cnr Hughes & Yarraview Roads, Wonga Park, VIC, 3115.
Region: Yarra Valley and Dandenongs

The Heritage Golf and Country Club (Henley Course)

The Heritage Golf & Country Club is located in the spectacular Yarra Valley (a prime Victorian wine district). The Henley Course contrasts beautifully with the stadium style St John course. Henley is tranquil, rich in wildlife and is bordered by a tapestry of roughs as picturesque as its flawless fairways.

Par (Length): 72 (6353m)
Design: Tony Cashmore (2006)
Top 100: 72

The Heritage Golf and Country Club (St.John Course)

The Heritage Golf and Country Club (St.John Course)

Cnr Hughes & Yarraview Roads, Wonga Park, VIC, 3115.
Region: Yarra Valley and Dandenongs

The Heritage Golf and Country Club (St.John Course)

The Heritage Golf & Country Club is located in the spectacular Yarra Valley (a prime Victorian wine district). The Heritage is a Jack Nicklaus Signature designed golf course that meanders its way through gently rolling hills and carefully placed water hazards. The St.John course is a championship golf course and at 6670 metres long features specially designed bunkering to guide players toward the green. Generous landing areas, sculptured fairways, immaculately groomed greens, paved cart paths that weave throughout the course, and meticulous landscaping all add to your playing pleasure.

Par (Length): 72 (6667m)
Design: Jack Nicklaus (2000)
Top 100: 55

NOTE: A number of private golf clubs require that visitors have a registered handicap and are members of a recognised interstate or overseas golf club. Documentary proof is generally required. In such cases, GOLFSelect will request that each member of the group supplies a letter of introduction from his or her golf club. Golf clubs that have this requirement are listed with the comment "Letter of introduction required".

Door of Hope Australia Inc.

GOLFSelect is strongly committed to assisting children who are not as fortunate as our own. We enjoy a very strong association with Door of Hope Australia Inc. This child-focused, non government organisation was established to help alleviate the suffering caused by poverty in developing nations. Their vision is that children in every nation will have access to education, clean water, nutrition, medical care, and protection from war, abuse and exploitation. As part of our association, a donation is provided to Door of Hope for every holiday that we organise on behalf of you, our client. We thank you for supporting this initiative and helping to make an important difference to those who do not always have a voice.
